What goes up must come down. The pandemic is working its way through through the great cities of the North. It is in the East Midlands and with the certainty of night following day restrictions are coming to London.
I don’t envy anyone who is having to course a path between keeping people safe and keeping the economy open.
The first lockdown had a certain ‘novelty’ value to it. We’d not seen anything like it before and everyone was asked to be part of the same exercise. This time around it’s different. Fatigue is the biggest followed by perceived inequality.
Fatigue and fairness will act as a drag on people’s mental health and resilience. There’s not much encouragement about vaccine treatments and there’s a long winter ahead. Anxiety is a natural reaction in these circumstances and managing anxiety is important.
Managing anxiety – how to do it
When people recognise their anxiety triggers and have tools to hand that they have learned, the onset of an anxiety or panic attack can be dealt with.
I only use treatments in my counselling sessions that I know work because I use them myself. I’m not a counsellor who consumes text books on different or new techniques. I have to believe in what I telling my clients and with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) I have that.
The technique is also known as tapping. You tap on meridian points on the body (similar points used in acupuncture) to help disperse acute feelings associated with anxiety. The beauty of the treatment is that once you have learnt to effectively apply it, you can help yourself whenever you need to. It’s also a discrete activity. For example if being ‘crowded’ in an enclosed space was an anxiety trigger, you could quietly walk away to somewhere more private (a bathroom) and do the tapping exercises until a feeling of relative calm and control returned.
